The 2023/2024 greenhouse watermelon campaign in Andalusia has seen a significant shift in price dynamics. While producers experienced a 27.5% increase in price per kilogram, reaching €0.51/kg, a stark contrast to the previous season's €0.40/kg, consumers enjoyed an 18.63% decrease in the price they paid, with watermelons selling for an average of €0.83/kg. This reduction in the price gap between producers and consumers, now at 62.75%, represents a significant improvement from the 155% increase seen in the previous campaign. Over the past decade, the price fluctuations between producers and consumers have varied widely, highlighting the challenges Spanish farmers face in maintaining profitability amidst global market fluctuations, production cost pressures, and climatic risks.
