Spain: Watermelon producers increase their sales prices

The 2023/2024 greenhouse watermelon campaign in Andalusia has been marked by a significant increase in prices for producers, while consumers have benefited from a drop in market prices. According to data from the Price and Market Observatory of the Junta de Andalucía, analyzed by Hortoinfo, the average price paid to Spanish farmers for watermelon has jumped by 27.5% compared to the previous season, reaching €0.51/kg. At the same time, the average price for consumers has fallen by 18.63%, reaching €0.83/kg on the shelves. This increase in producer prices is notable, especially compared to the previous campaign (2022/2023), when producers received €0.40/kg. Andalusian producers have thus seen their incomes increase, largely due to increased production costs and fluctuating demand in the agricultural market.
