Spain has successfully secured phytosanitary protocols for exporting Spanish almonds and fresh persimmons to China, marking a significant achievement in bilateral agricultural trade. The protocols, signed during a visit by Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to Beijing, require specific registrations, good agricultural practices, and integrated pest management for persimmon growers. Almond exports to China are expected to hit 50,000 metric tons by 2025 and 90,000 metric tons by 2032. Meanwhile, persimmon production in Spain is recovering from a severe drop due to phytosanitary issues and climate challenges. Currently, Spanish almonds and a few other fruits are the only products with approval for export to China, but negotiations are underway to include more products.
