Chile has declared an agricultural emergency due to the discovery of the strawberry nematode, Aphelenchoides fragariae, a pest that was previously not present in the country. The pest has rapidly spread in the central-southern region, leading to the government providing support to producers and developing a control strategy. The Undersecretary of Agriculture, José Guajardo, mentioned that while it is unlikely to eradicate the pest, efforts will be made to minimize its impact on the approximately 5,000 families dependent on strawberry production. Funds have been approved to support these efforts, and producers are not required to remove their plants or strawberries.
