The Argentine squid industry is opposing plans by ports in Comodoro Rivadavia and Rio Grande to provide services to the Chinese jigger fleet operating in mile 201 of the Argentine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The industry believes this could lead to the exploitation of Argentine marine resources and unfair competition, as these fleets often disregard Argentine fishing regulations and work conditions. They argue that the Argentine government should act to prevent this and maintain Argentine foreign policy interests. The industry also expresses concern that some of these vessels may operate with illegal licenses issued by the British government in the Malvinas Islands.
