Study reveals that nut crops in Portugal are the most efficient in water use and sustainable efficiency

A study conducted by Portugal Nuts in partnership with the Real Academia de Ingeneria de Madrid reveals that the water use in Portugal's nut orchards is efficient and environmentally friendly, using less water per kilogram of dried fruit produced compared to the USA. This is particularly beneficial in regions like Alentejo, which have faced water scarcity, but have made significant public investments to irrigate. The drip irrigation culture used in these regions requires less water and is regulated to prevent unnecessary losses. The dried fruit industry in Portugal is valued for its sustainability and has contributed to the economy and job market, with Portugal achieving self-sufficiency in the almond market and maintaining a positive trade balance. The II Portugal Nuts Congress discussed various topics including innovation, sustainability, and international markets, and concluded with a social responsibility project, 'Amigos Portugal Nuts', aimed at donating to social solidarity institutions.
