The Malaysian government has redirected a RM40 million subsidy initially intended for general purpose wheat flour to the Payung Rahmah program under the 2024 Budget, as per Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Fuziah Salleh. This decision was made due to the subsidy being unclaimed because of the non-existence of demand for general use flour and the absence of factories producing it. Fuziah Salleh also addressed concerns over the termination of the wheat flour subsidy and countered claims about the inefficiency in the distribution and production of other subsidized goods like sugar and cooking oil post the 15th General Election (GE15), by presenting data that shows an increase in production in 2023 compared to 2022.
