India's sugar exports for the 2021-22 season are expected to face challenges due to increased production in Thailand, instability in Afghanistan, and currency shortage in Sri Lanka. The country plans to divert 3.5 million tonne and 6 million tonne of sugar for ethanol production and exports respectively. The government does not plan to provide any assistance for exports this season and urges the industry to educate consumers to increase sugar consumption.
The food secretary also urged for a proper pricing policy in the sugar sector, which is crucial for over 50 million farmers. The government expects to export nearly 6 million tonne in the 2021-22 season to liquidate surplus sugar.
