A new variety of sugar peas, developed in China, has been introduced and is set to be promoted globally. The variety, Longwan 5, has fewer leaves but more tendrils and is resistant to powdery mildew, a common problem for the crop. It is an early maturing variety with edible skins and potential for double harvest. The developers believe that its large-scale cultivation will increase China's pea production and benefit farmers by increasing income. The variety is adaptable to other temperate regions.
