The Indonesian government has increased the reference price for consumer sugar by IDR 1,500, ranging from IDR 17,500 to IDR 18,500 per kg, from April 5 to May 31, 2024. This decision aims to ensure sugar availability and stabilize prices, which have been rising since September 2023. The highest price recorded was 29,320 per kg in the Papua Mountains, significantly higher than the average price of IDR 14,400 per kg from the previous year. The government is implementing measures such as a cheap food movement, distribution of sugar, and accelerating imports of raw crystal sugar to control the market and prevent disruption.
