This is evident from an inventory by the Belgian research institute PCA. This stock is comparable to the five-year average and is approximately 68 percent of the total production of storage potatoes in Belgium. Only 21 percent of the potatoes, which is slightly more than 500,000 tons, in the Belgian potato warehouses are still freely marketable. That share is considerably lower than the five-year average calculated at 31 percent. PCA notes that there is a shift in potato cultivation towards more contract cultivation. The research institute sees a relationship with the cultivation of more specific storage varieties. Especially Fontane in stock As of 1 February, 1.53 million tonnes of the largest Belgian potato variety, Fontane, are still in stock. That is 63 percent of the total.
