Sustainable Initiatives Allow Reduction of Illegal Coca Crops in Vraem

After eight years of continuous growth in illicit coca leaf production, the Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro River Valley (Vraem) registered a 5% reduction in its cultivated area. This change was possible thanks to the implementation of sustainable development productive initiatives such as coffee, cocoa, beekeeping, aquaculture, among others, promoted by the National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs (Devida). According to the 2024 Coca Crop Monitoring Report, presented by Devida and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), this change in the Vraem, which represents a decrease of 1,908 hectares, demonstrates the impact of articulated actions by the Peruvian State to transform social and productive conditions in one of the areas most affected by the drug trafficking business model.
