The European Commission has recently declared Sardinia and Sweden as free from African swine fever (ASF) following a revision in the EU's regionalization strategy. This milestone comes after the eradication of ASF in Sardinia, which was first reported in 1978 and persisted until 2019, and Sweden's recovery from an ASF outbreak in 2023. The success in Sardinia was achieved through the collaboration of EU, national, and regional authorities, alongside stringent wildlife and pig management practices. Sweden's recovery also faced challenges, including 60 ASF cases reported in Ukraine within eight months.
