Mexico's Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) has imposed a temporary ban on the commercial use of all shrimp species in the Pacific Ocean's federal jurisdiction, including the Gulf of California, and in Baja California Sur, Nayarit, Sinaloa and Sonora's lagoon, estuarine, marshes and bays, effective from March 20. The ban, based on the Mexican Institute for Research in Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture's technical opinion, aims to promote sustainable use of aquatic resources, protect shrimp stock reproductive processes, and recruit juveniles to breeding and growing areas. Violators will face penalties under the General Law of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sustainable and other legal provisions.
