The Ministry of Agriculture has reported on the 2023/2024 citrus campaign, which has seen the lowest production in eleven years due to drought and irrigation limitations, with a harvest of 5,730 million tons, a 15% decrease from the average of the previous five years. Despite the reduced production, Spain, as the leading EU and sixth worldwide producer, has achieved a trade surplus of 2,509 million euros. The Valencian Community, the leading national producer, experienced a 17% drop in total production, while Murcia saw a 6% increase due to an increase in lemon and grapefruit production. The revaluation of Spanish citrus exports has led to a positive trade balance, with a volume of 2.34 million tons exported, generating an increase in value compared to the previous campaign and the average of the last five.
