The Spanish fruit sector is undergoing a transformation aimed at increasing profitability, as reported from the Las Palmerillas Experimental Station of the Cajamar Foundation. This transformation involves introducing new varieties and species, adopting more sustainable production systems, and using cultivation techniques that increase production value. The research coordinator, Juan José Hueso Martín, stresses the importance of obtaining new plant material to meet consumer and distribution chain demands. Spain is leading the development of new varieties of almonds, peaches, and citrus fruits, among others, with programs also focusing on new rootstocks for stone or citrus fruit trees. This development makes the fruit sector more competitive and reduces dependence on foreign programs.
