The ICEX has released a study on the beef and sheep meat market in Japan 2021, covering the period 2016 to 2020. The research by Miguel Gómez Loira and Pablo José Iglesias Marquina provides an in-depth analysis of the market, including supply and demand, pricing, and perception of Spanish products. It also discusses distribution channels, market access, and opportunities. The study reveals that while Japan's beef production remains stable at around 330,000 tons per year, only 0.5% is for export, and imports range from 503,226 to 615,409 tons per year. Australian and American beef dominate the market, accounting for 27.9% and 27.1% respectively. Sheep meat imports are much lower, at 20,960 tonnes per year. The report suggests that Spanish companies could find success by targeting the gourmet market, where European meat has a stronger presence, and focusing on products like bovine tongue and sheep meat.
