From July 1, 2025, Turkey will increase the transit fee for ships passing through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles for the fourth time in the last two years – this time by 15%, to $5.83 per net ton. This decision will increase pressure on logistics costs for Black Sea region countries. The fee for ships passing through the Bosphorus Strait is determined by the golden franc. Funds are collected by Turkey in accordance with the Montreux Convention. The last increase was in July 2024, when the fee rose by 14.7% to $5.07 per ton. Before 2022, the fee remained unchanged for almost 40 years, at a level of $0.80 per ton. The Turkish government stated that revenues from these fees will be used to improve infrastructure and ship traffic monitoring systems in the straits.
