The cattle population in agricultural organizations in Russia from January to March 2026 decreased by 0.8% year-on-year, with cows decreasing by 1.7%. Experts link this to the ongoing consolidation of the industry and the exit of inefficient and small farms from the market. Additionally, the industry is affected by anti-epizootic measures in a number of regions. In January–March 2026, the cattle population in agricultural organizations amounted to 7.3 million heads, decreasing by 0.8% year-on-year, according to Rosstat. The cow population decreased by 1.7% to 2.9 million heads. Among the regions with a large base, Siberia showed the most significant decline. In the Novosibirsk region, the cattle population lost 11% over the year to 212.9 thousand heads, and cows 13.1% to 88 thousand heads.
