Chinese authorities have successfully cloned three high-yielding cows, setting the country on a path to reduce imports of purebred dairy cows from the West. A team of scientists from the Northwest University of Agricultural and Forestry Technology cloned 120 embryos from productive Holstein Friesian cows and implanted them in surrogate cows. The goal is to create a herd of 1,000 'super cows' that can produce at least 18 tons of milk a year, equivalent to over 100 tons in their lifetime. This initiative is expected to make having the best cows economically feasible for China.
