Over 2,300 workers in Uruguay's meat processing industry are currently on unemployment insurance, with an additional 350 from the Casa Blanca S.A. (Fricasa) plant soon to join them. Fricasa's financial troubles, including a debt of $25-$30 million to its largest creditor, have led to a significant reduction in operations and a substantial portion of the workforce being suspended. This crisis, not only in Fricasa but also in other meat packing plants, is causing idle capacity and threatening thousands of jobs. The situation is prompting calls for the extension of unemployment insurance benefits and the development of long-term strategies to address the financial challenges within the sector and ensure its sustainability and competitiveness.
