Some wholesale grocers in Mandalay city have reported that the habit of reducing white sugar consumption is becoming more widespread, leading to a decrease in domestic white sugar consumption and, consequently, a reduction in sales volume on grocery store shelves. One operator said, "This year, the habit of reducing white sugar consumption has become more prevalent, and the purchase volume in retail stores is not large. We wholesalers are no longer stockpiling large amounts of white sugar like we used to, and sales have decreased significantly compared to usual." Following the widespread dissemination of medical information about the potential health issues caused by excessive white sugar consumption, domestic white sugar consumption has been below normal levels. Therefore, food retailers and wholesalers have also reduced their inventory and sales of white sugar. Currently, the price of white sugar continues to fall, with refined white sugar, which was priced at 4000 to 5000 Myanmar kyat per viss (approximately 1.65 kilograms) last month, now priced at around 3000 Myanmar kyat per viss. It is reported that Myanmar produces approximately 500,000 tons of white sugar annually, with the majority of it being exported to Vietnam.
