In Egypt, efforts to streamline port operations and address market shortages have led to significant government actions. Al-Shahat Ghatouri, head of the Customs Authority, issued Circular No. 18 of 2024, revoking a previous circular to facilitate the handling of abandoned goods at ports, effective from April 2024. This aligns with the Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly's directive to clear ports of neglected goods, following Customs Law No. 207 of 2020. Additionally, the government has decided to confiscate goods from owners delaying their release, aiming to counteract market shortages caused by speculations on the dollar's value. These measures, along with a transaction for Ras El Hekma City Development and an IMF agreement, have improved dollar availability, allowing for the clearance of goods worth over $4.5 billion. Madbouly has called for significant price reductions in food and basic commodities, reflecting the dollar's decrease from 72 to 46 pounds, to stabilize the economy and benefit citizens.
