The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food of Spain has announced the distribution of the western horse mackerel stock quota for the EU fleet in 2025, allocating 6,719 tons to Spain, which is a significant increase and returns the quota to pre-2022 levels. The quota will be shared among various Spanish fishing fleets, including bottom trawlers, purse seines, and other gear, and will be used for directed fishing, allowing for more exploration of the fish stock. The resolution also sets aside a portion of the quota for quota exchanges with other countries and as a reserve for unforeseen circumstances. This allocation aims to address past challenges and provide opportunities for the development of new fisheries.
