The European Commission has decided to bring a lawsuit against Bulgaria and three other European Union member states before the Court of Justice of the EU for failing to meet their commitments to reduce emissions of several types of air pollutants, as required by the Directive on the reduction of national emissions of certain atmospheric pollutants (EU 2016/2284), known as the "NTE Directive," according to the EC's representative office here. Specifically, Bulgaria has not fulfilled its commitment to reduce ammonia (NH3) emissions. The directive sets national obligations to reduce emissions of several pollutants, which each member state must meet each year from 2020 to 2029, and an ambition for greater reductions from 2030 onwards.
