The European Commission backs Bulgaria's proposal to shift its remaining turbot quota for 2021 to the turbot fishing opportunities for 2023. The total allowable turbot catch for next year will remain the same. This decision is a result of the sustainable management of fishery resources in collaboration with Romania and Turkey, leading to an increase in turbot biomass. The Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture expressed gratitude for the EC's support and shared concerns about the challenges faced by the fisheries sector due to the pandemic and the situation in Ukraine. The ministry is seeking urgent assistance from the EC to support the sector. Bulgaria operates over 1,800 fishing vessels in the Black Sea, contributing to about 25% of the country's total catch. The country is dedicated to achieving sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.
