The European Commission has recognized 'Aydın Memecik Zeytinyağı', an extra virgin olive oil from Aydin province, by adding it to the EU's Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) register. The oil, produced from the Memecik olive variety, is distinguished by its unique bitter and spicy taste and high phenolic content, especially luteolin, due to the region's unique weather conditions. Research indicates that this olive oil's total phenolic and sterol content is significantly higher than oils from other regions.
