Ignacio Huertas, general secretary of UPA-Extremadura, reported significant losses in cherry crops due to May and June rains, amounting to 15 million kilos of cherries and 30 million euros for farmers for the second year in a row. A meeting in Madrid led to the formation of a working group to evaluate agricultural insurance in Extremadura. Huertas criticized the current insurance system as inadequate and costly, with reduced compensations. The sector demands substantial reforms in cherry insurance and aid, advocating for agricultural insurance to serve as income maintenance. Presently, only 14% of the cherry-growing area in Extremadura is insured.
