Vegetable growers in Lower Saxony, Germany are facing challenges due to drought, leading to increased costs and crop losses. The drought has made irrigation, higher fertilizer and diesel prices more difficult to manage, and has caused stress to the vegetables, leading to early blooming and difficulty in spraying. Manual labor for harvesting and spraying is also becoming a challenge. The changing climate is affecting the soil conditions, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is making it difficult to find helpers for the farms. As a result, many vegetables are being thrown away due to not meeting the standard for sale.
