The harvest season for pomegranates from Suruç, which are registered as a geographical indication by the European Union (EU), has begun. The pomegranates picked from the trees, which are described as mayhoş (sour), are sent to European countries, while the sweet ones are sent to Arab countries. Despite a dry season this year, pomegranate producers in the Suruç district of Şanlıurfa are experiencing the joy of a bountiful harvest. The pomegranates picked from the orchards, those with good taste, are exported abroad, primarily to European and Arab countries, while some are delivered to domestic consumers. The ones that are sour are turned into pomegranate molasses. The pomegranate molasses, prepared using traditional methods in small workshops or homes, is marketed both domestically and abroad.
