The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in Spain has announced the start of the Iberian sardine fishery for 2023, opening on March 20, with a quota of 18,962 tons, marking the earliest start and highest quota in recent years. This decision, in collaboration with Portugal, results in a total available amount of 56,604 tons for both countries, as per the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea's recommendation. Spain's quota is distributed among various fleets, and catch and landing limits have been increased, reflecting the signs of recovery and improvement in the Iberian sardine population in the waters.
