The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is working to combat hunger and improve food security through the promotion of avocado cultivation. FAO representative in Colombia, Agustín Zimmermann, highlighted the nutritional benefits and growth potential of avocados at the Avocado Territory 2024 event. However, the agency also emphasized the challenges the industry faces, such as deforestation, price volatility, climate change, and increased production costs due to the pandemic. Despite these challenges, the FAO sees potential in avocado production, especially in Colombia, due to its geographical advantages and the growth of its avocado industry. The FAO is also involved in the "Responsible Fruits" project, focusing on sustainable avocado and pineapple production, funded by the German government.
