(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Yoon-gu = The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 2nd that quarantine negotiations with China for the export of Korean persimmons have been concluded.

President Lee Jae-myung and Chinese National President Xi Jinping reached an understanding memorandum (MOU) on this matter during their first summit meeting the previous day.

This is an achievement 17 years after requesting the export of Korean persimmons to China in 2008.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs evaluated this as significant in establishing a foothold for entry into the Chinese market, which has a population of 1.4 billion.

Throughout this period, the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency has negotiated based on scientific evidence and has established management plans for pests and diseases that China is concerned about, leading to mutual trust between the two countries and ultimately reaching an agreement on quarantine requirements, paving the way for the export of Korean persimmons.

To export Korean persimmons to China, quarantine requirements such as orchard and branch manager registration, pest and disease monitoring, and inclusion of export plant quarantine certificate details must be met.

The Agency will establish related notices, educate farmers, and take follow-up procedures to lay the groundwork for expanding exports.

Gil Pan-geun, Chairman of the Korean Persimmon Association, expressed his welcome, stating that it will help increase farmers' income.

Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mi-ryeong said, "The conclusion of this quarantine negotiation will be a new stepping stone for persimmon farmers seeking new export markets" and "To expand domestic agricultural product exports and open new markets, we will actively discover promising export items and continue strategic quarantine negotiations to increase agricultural exports."
