Spain: Manufacturers' association demands reduction of VAT to 4% on natural yogurts as it is considered staple food

The Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Yogurt and Fresh Dairy Desserts (AEFY) has demanded the reduction of VAT, from 10% to 4%, on natural yogurts and natural fermented milk as they are considered a staple food. AEFY considers the involvement of the Public Administrations necessary to promote the consumption of healthy foods through a proportional fiscal policy. Natural yogurt is a nutritionally dense food, a source of several essential nutrients in a low caloric intake, which contribute to improving the quality of the diet within a balanced and healthy eating pattern. AEFY points out that a whole yogurt covers less than 5% of the average energy expenditure of an adult male, but that it allows covering more than 15% of the recommended daily intakes for calcium and phosphorus, as well as more than 10% of the recommended daily intakes of vitamins B2 and B12.
