The Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete (Madrid) confirmed last Monday the positive test for the African swine fever virus (ASF) in two wild boars found dead within the high-risk area delimited within a six-kilometer radius of the point where the first outbreak occurred on November 28 in Cendañola del Vallés (Barcelona). With these two new cases, the number of wild boars that have died in Catalonia due to this disease rises to 29, according to sources from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA). Similarly, the Algete laboratory has also confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Bellpuig (Lérida), in a farm with a population of 235,000 laying hens. The official veterinary services are investigating the cause of this outbreak and consider contact with a contaminated wild bird as the most likely hypothesis.
