In the USA, 5 infections caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax have been confirmed, including four in Texas and one in New Mexico. Screwworm fly larvae attack living, healthy tissue, and untreated myiasis can lead to severe complications and death in animals or humans. The once effective technique of sterile males is now under pressure, as since 2023, the number of cases in Central America and Mexico has been rising. We have already reported several times that after several decades, infections caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax have reappeared in the USA. So far, 5 cases of infection have been confirmed in various animal species (cattle, goat, dog). Four of them occurred in Texas, while one was in New Mexico. A particular concern is the fact that the larvae of this species do not feed on dead tissue, as is the case with many other flies.
