The Provincial Executive in Friesland has proposed a new plan, Gans in Balans, to address the increasing damage caused by geese to grasslands. The plan allows for a more localized approach, empowering regional parties to reduce damage and protect meadow birds and geese. It includes the appointment of a goose coordinator for each area and the introduction of a foraging area in October where farmers can claim compensation for damage. The damage from year-round geese, especially the gray goose, is on the rise, leading to an increase in compensation costs from 8.5 million euros to 12.6 million euros between 2018 and 2023.
