A new rice variety, Taoyuan No. 7, has been developed by Taogai Chang to resist rice fever, a fungal disease that significantly reduces yields. The variety, which has better disease resistance and similar aroma to Taoyuan No. 3, was bred over eight years through backcrossing and molecular marker technology. It is expected to save farmers thousands in chemical control costs and increase yields by 15% compared to Taoyuan No. 3. The researchers plan to continue breeding disease-resistant varieties to combat the evolving rice fever strains.
