President John Magufuli of Tanzania has designated a new Minister of Agriculture with the responsibility of eradicating the country's reliance on food imports, particularly wheat. To achieve this, the government will focus on enhancing the productivity of key crops and promoting commercial agriculture. This includes expanding irrigation areas, improving access to agricultural inputs and financial services for smallholders, and increasing storage capacity to reduce crop losses. The ultimate goal is to stimulate economic growth, alleviate poverty, and create job opportunities by developing major sectors such as agriculture, livestock, fisheries, industry, mining, trade, and tourism.
