The 2020 Northern bonito fishing campaign, operated by 164 certified inshore fleets from the Basque Country, Cantabria, and Asturias, has caught 75% of its quota in early August. This fishery, which targets bonito in the Bay of Biscay and adjacent waters, has improved its sustainability practices, as shown by the MSC seal it carries, and has fully implemented catch control rules set by ICCAT. The fishery has a high selectivity rate, with minimal interaction with protected species, and has adopted a code of conduct for the safe release of cetaceans, birds, and turtles. Eroski, a retail distribution company, was the first in Spain to obtain the MSC chain of custody to sell fresh bonito with the MSC seal, promoting sustainable fishing through its sales and media campaigns.
