The number of cattle farms in Spain has seen a significant decrease, dropping by 18.9% from 140,000 in 2014 to just under 115,000 in 2024, according to the Integrated Animal Traceability System (SITRAN) of the Ministry of Agriculture. This decline is part of a larger trend that has been ongoing for the past decade, with pre-fattening farms experiencing the most significant drop. Factors such as business concentration, lack of generational change, and price fluctuations have contributed to this trend. Additionally, the cattle herd in Spain has also seen a decrease since 2021, with the number of dairy cows in particular experiencing a decline for three decades.
