The Ukrainian dairy industry has faced significant challenges due to the disruption of supply chains and the loss of livestock caused by the Russian Federation's military aggression. As of December 1, 2022, the number of cows in Ukraine was 1.38 million, a decrease of 13.9% from the previous year. The industrial dairy sector and households both reported reductions in their herds. The largest herds of cows are located in the Poltava, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv regions. The industry has experienced its greatest losses in the early months of the war, with some regions seeing up to a 50% reduction in dairy farms. Despite these challenges, farms in stable regions are still increasing their livestock numbers.
