The Netherlands Onion Association has reported a significant decrease in onion harvests both in Ukraine and the EU, including Great Britain, for the 2022/2023 season. Ukraine's onion cultivation area has shrunk from 54 to 46 thousand hectares, leading to a harvest of 732,000 tons, a 29% decrease compared to 2021. The EU and Britain saw their onion harvest drop to 6.3 million tons, the lowest in four years, with a 9% decrease in cultivation area and a 13.4% drop in yield due to dry summer conditions and lack of drip irrigation. As a result, imports are expected to reach 120,000 tons to make up for the shortfall.
