Spain was the leading fruit and vegetable producer in the European Union in 2020, with a total production of 23.12 million tons, according to the European Statistics Handbook 2021. Despite the pandemic, the sector experienced a growth of 7.7% in exports, generating 14,594 million euros. The EU accounted for 93.5% of these exports. Vegetable exports increased by 4.6% to 6,022 million euros, with peppers and lettuce being the most exported. Fruit exports also saw a increase, reaching 8,572 million euros, despite a 5% volume decrease. The value of commonly exported products like citrus and stone fruit also increased.
