Recent unexpected durian harvests from Malaysia have led to a significant drop in the price of Musang King durians in Singapore, with a 40% decrease noted. This unexpected surge in supply, coupled with predicted supply shortages, has resulted in a significant shift in market dynamics. Despite initial weather challenges causing production delays and reducing overall durian yields by over 50%, hotter weather accelerated durian maturation, resulting in a larger harvest. This has further impacted the pricing of other durian varieties and red shrimp in the Singapore market. In an effort to stimulate sales, retailers have introduced promotional offers. Meanwhile, Malaysia has introduced two new durian varieties, D216 (J. Sparrow) and D217 (Jerai), which are not yet widely available.
