The 2020-2021 sugar harvest in Guatemala concluded with a production of 2.56 million metric tons, marking a 7.2% decrease from the previous season, as reported by the Guatemalan Sugar Association (Asazgua). The total harvest amounted to 55,758,979 quintals, and the growth of the high-yielding, disease-resistant sugarcane variety CG02-163 played a significant role in improving harvest efficiency and competitiveness. The cultivation of sugarcane across 253,000 hectares supports a robust economy on the southern coast of Guatemala, generating over 54,000 direct jobs and providing opportunities for more than 6,325 suppliers. Additionally, sugarcane residues are utilized for alcohol production and renewable energy generation, with the mills contributing 30% of Guatemala's total energy consumption during the recent harvest period.
