The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) of Peru anticipates that the country's potato exports may reach $5 million by the end of this year, building on a record-setting 2020 when 16,000 tons of fresh potato and "tunta" dehydrated potato were exported to Bolivia. The demand for Peruvian potatoes, particularly from the United States for processed, precooked, and frozen products, and in Europe for the native Peruvian potato, has surged, especially amid the pandemic. Bolivia has emerged as a significant buyer of Peruvian fresh potatoes, and there is a high demand for "tunta" in that country. Additionally, a vodka made from native Peruvian potatoes from Huancavelica is popular in the United States, and the International Potato Center has identified 70 native potato varieties suitable for frying, some of which have been registered for commercial cultivation.
