Peruvian staple foods, quinoa and potatoes, are experiencing price increases due to a severe scarcity caused by a rainfall deficit in Puno, as reported by Milthon Pérez Smith, the regional agricultural director. The deficit has significantly impacted the production of these staple foods, with quinoa plantations seeing a 24,197 hectare affectation and potato plantations 31,519 hectares. This issue has been particularly severe in the 2022-2023 agricultural campaign, leading to a reduction in harvests for both self-consumption and seed, as highlighted by the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi), which noted a 70% rainfall deficit between January and February of this year.
