The consumption of pork in Mexico has been increasing, with a 7.3% growth compared to the previous year. The states of Jalisco and Sonora are the main producers, generating around 400,000 tons per year. The pork trade between Mexico and other countries reached 1,632,000 tons in 2022, with an estimated growth of 6% for 2023. The pork industry faces challenges such as diseases and the need for improved biosecurity measures. Animal health experts met in Puerto Vallarta at the High Quality Congress Pork LATAM 2023 to discuss these challenges and share innovations in the sector. One specific challenge highlighted was ileitis, an enteric disease that affects the absorption of nutrients in pigs and increases the cost of production for farmers. Technology, such as vaccines with improved technology and genetic lines, plays a crucial role in prevention and improving efficiency in pig production.
