The Young Farmers Agricultural Association (Asaja) Alicante has warned that Valencian clementines face a death sentence due to the European Union's revision of the Agreement with South Africa, if it does not include tariffs and a ban on citrus from the continent during the Spanish campaign. Asaja has accused distribution chains and supermarkets of rejecting Spanish clementines in favor of South African mandarins, which do not meet European standards. They are calling on the EU to negotiate fair competition and for the Spanish government to defend Valencian farmers against unfair competition from third countries. Asaja has also highlighted misleading labeling in supermarkets and is urging the Food Information and Control Agency to impose sanctions.
