SANTA CRUZ.- The El Correntoso estancia, nestled against the mountain range in northwestern Santa Cruz, has turned from green to gray: a plague of tucura sapo attacked the field a few days ago and left no plant alive in its wake. “I am not willing to leave the field to the tucuras, they are destroying it today,” says Elvira Cvjetanovic, one of the owners of the field, who, in these gloomy times, is facing a phenomenon like never before in the area. The tucura sapo is an insect that does not transmit diseases or cause injuries to humans or animals, but it causes severe damage to the affected agricultural and livestock areas, both in natural and planted grasslands. Due to its biological characteristics, it must be confined to its natural habitat to avoid significant economic and social damage.
